What it means to be a cool cat

There are several things in my life that I swore I wouldn't do.  I won't bore, or entertain, you with that list, but one of them is "get a cat, especially before I get a dog."  Nonetheless, last week, I reneged on that statement and I found myself with a cat.

First off, we are not supposed to have pets here at The DU...but if you know me, I already have a happenin turtle.
Secondly, a cat is not exactly the display of manliness that I am looking to reveal in my life.
Thirdly, cats are cats...they are much better for kicking.(just kidding...no, but seriously)

So here I am, a little less than two weeks ago, and a friend of mine was in need.  She needed me to take care of her cat.  "Ok, I can do this.  Surely it won't be for long.  She really needs my help right now and I am a great friend, so I will take care of the cat."  Turns out it is a kitten, which is cool, because it is still in that cute stage where it plays with anything and everything and it look at you like you are a prick when you walk in the door, so we're golden there.  Last piece of set up information = the cat's name is Meow....see the originality?
(It makes me think of Super Troopers when he keeps saying meow after he pulled Jim Gaffigan over)

So the cat stays.  It's litterbox trained, so it shouldn't be too bad.  The first night, I leave my door open as I head to bed.  I'm reading a book, when I see this ball of grey fuzz bee-lining it for my bed.  She leaps up on the bed, and proceeds to move and stretch and lick (not necessarily in that order) until she finds a spot to sleep.  And she sleeps there until I wake up in the morning.  I slept with Meow.

Next night...same thing.  Third night, little later, but still she comes to the bed and plops wherever she sees fit to get a good night's rest.  It was kinda cool.  I was starting to feel a little bonding going on.  (That may make you question my manhood, but I am confident...I think).  A week came and went and I was spending regulaer time with Meow just chillin why I was reading and she was....licking.  I even went out and purchased her some kitty litter.  She pretty much figured out the entire house from top to bottom in merely a week.

So last Thursday comes, and the owner is ready to have the cat back.  I'd been hanging out with this cat for a week and I guess part of me started to think that I was going to keep her for good and I kinda pushed the whole fact that I was going to have to give her back the corner of my mind.  So the friend called, said she was ready...and it hit me.  I have to admit it, I was a little emotionally attached.  I liked the cat.  It was definitely one of the coolest cats I've ever seen and been around.  So I got the owner to take a picture of me with the cat.  One last shot.  If my eyes look misty in the picture, it's because I just woke up or something, not because I was sad.

So here I am, about a week later, Meow the cat has come into my life and gone out of my life in a flash.

And how do I feel, you ask?

I'd still rather have a dog.

PS.  I did some research about my turtle.  It turns out its not a girl.  'Tis of the opposite gender...the superior one, perhaps?  Anyways, I've made an executive decison and decided from henceforth that my turtle's name will be Zo, rather than the aformentioned Zoe.  Right now, the Zo is short for Alonzo....however, if you have a name that you would like to recommend that starts with an E, then I could continue to call him Zo E. Bearden.  So, help a brotha out.

    Turtle fo Life

That's all for now.  You stay classy...planet earth.

If a turtle loses it's shell, is it homeless or naked?

It's Easter...I've finally caught up on my school work (don't worry, I'll slack off again this week to make sure I stay behind)...but now, I've got a little time on my hands, so I thought about an update.

    Hope you enjoy.

Altmix came into town this weekend.  That's nothing new, but he actually let me know he was here this time, which was quite delightful.  I wish I had gotten a picture with him as visual proof, but it is true, he was here.  We played horseshoes in my backyard and I owned him...both underhanded and overhanded horseshoes.  Katy came out too, so we got a little sun and tossed around the shoes.  Steve rode with them...I'm pretty sure he had on the most ridiculous outfit ever....I didn't know they still made jean shorts.

Ole' Woody stopped by to see me too the other day.  He imparted some computer wisdom on me and we hung for a bit.  It was good to see him.  I did happen to snap a shot of him though, he's got a mop for hair now...it is crazy long.

Here's my turtle Zoe.  I got her back in November, so she has grown a lot.  Here is a side by side, so you can see just how much she has grown.  It's been kinda cool....my very first pet that I can call my absolute own.

I like this picture of her...I think she jumped off the table after this shot.

On that note, one of my dogs, from back in Commerce died.  Hooch, my rottweiler.  Beuatiful dog, but he was getting old (12 or 13 - he came to us injured one day because he had been shot by someone, so he was looking for a home, so we don't know his specific age).  He had a nasty big dog bark, but once you'd start petting him, he'd turn into a teddy bear.  I could get him to stomp his back foot when I scratched his stomach, very similar to Thumper on Bambi.  He died on April 3, so that was sad.  I'd love to have another dog like him.  He definitely made me smile.

I took 7 folks from the church down to Biloxi, MS on a mission trip the first week in April.  It was amazing.  We reroofed 18 houses and insulated and sheetrocked 8 houses.  God blessed me with the opportunity to lead one of our youth to Christ while we were down there and then he gave me the chance later on in the week to lead our homeowner (that we were doing the sheetrock for) to Christ on our last day there.  It was absolutely amazing to watch the progression towards God that this man made as he saw the love of Christ in us and sought that same kind of love in his life.  It was truly a blessing.
This is the house we worked on all week.

Here is the inside, before the sheetrock

    Here is the post-sheetrock shot.

Here's the crew I worked with all week.  7th and 8th graders hanging sheetrock...but they were awesome.

That's about all I got for now.  Coming up next I have to get together and start planning my 5 year high school reunion.  That should be fun....we'll see how it goes.  Makes me think of the age old question...."Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

Israelis and Egyptians walk like Jesus

I posted in January.  It’s March.  Time flies.  The past few months have been busier than ever.  But they have been the most incredible.  Here’s a summary of what has been going on:

    Youth Conference in Chattanooga, TN
    Disciple Now in Athens
    Trip to Israel and Egypt
    X-Fuge Weekend in Ridgecrest, NC

On top of that, there has been TONS of seminary reading, papers, and tests
But believe me, these are complaints, these are blessings.
I have a ton of pics, so I tried to fine pick through them.  Here are ones from Israel and Egypt to whet your appetite.

This was my view from the back the whole trip.

This was the sunset on Arbel Cliff.

This was the absolute best place for me in Israel.  I was sitting in a lifeguard stand on the Sea of Galilee for most of the night.  Serenity.

This is the Jordan River near its beginnings

This is a Jesus Boat.  We rode this out on the Sea of Galilee and they fished from the deck.

This is a Tilapia.  They call it Peter's fish, from the Sea of Galilee.  I ate this for lunch.

I was re-baptized in the Jordan River.  If you look closely, you can see that I have a Chuck Norris shirt on underneath.  That's right, he did the deed with me.

Pastor Dan lead the dunking.  This is the full baptismal process.  I did come up with half the Jordan River in my nose, though.

This is the synagogue in Capernaum, where Jesus taught.

Here is me in Capernaum.  Peter's house is just below that spaceship looking thing on the right.

This the Church of the Fish and Loaves.  All that is left of this site is the rock you see at the top.

Here is the Mount of Beattitudes, where Jesus started his "Blessed is He..." sermon.

In Jericho, you can see the mountain from which Moses saw the Promised Land, but never entered.  You can also see the Mount of Temptation, where Jesus spent 40 days in the desert.

This was the security going into and leaving Jericho...pretty tight.

This is the sunset over Jerusalem.

The Dome of the Rock (Islamic Shrine) in Jerusalem at sunset.  It is the site where the Temple Mount is supposed to stand one day.

Here I am in the Garden of Gethsemane.  The Church of the Agony is behind me where many people believe Christ went off to pray while His disciples slept.

This is the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.  This is where the Nativity scene is said to have been.

This man on the left, Saint Jerome, translated the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin which is known as the Vulgate.  These efforts are to thank for our readable Bible today.  He spent some 30 years in the caves near the Nativity doing this.  I thought it was a cool shot of him, the nun that served as his maid, and the cross in the background.

Sheep and Goat Herders are awesome.

This is the wall in Bethlehem.  Not everyone likes having the wall.

Every one of these 18-20 year old girls was strapped with a M16.  They were in the Israeli army and on a field trip as part of a continuing education deal.
There were about 200 of them in all.  It was crazy.

This is the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, where Golgotha is thought to have been.  Basically, you walk up to this table, stick your hand in the hole provided and you can touch Golgotha...gotta love how the Greek Orthodox church pieced this one together.

This was at the Wailing Wall (Western Wall).  You can see all the prayers written on paper and stuck in the wall above their heads.  They are praying for the peace of Jerusalem.

He is not here, He is Risen!  This was upon exiting the Garden Tomb.

Brodizzle doing the Dead Sea Float.

We were told not to take pictures of the Egyptian guards.  I'm not very good with restraining from doing something I've been told not to do.  His machine gun is black and yellow.

This doesn't justify it, but the craziness of lanes in Cairo was absurd.  Traffic lights were non-existent.  Lane lines were merely suggestions.  Our guide told us that traffic lights were just to teach their kids the colors.  We actually backed into a car on our bus.  The driver got out, moved the car, then went on his way.  I don't think I would make it there as a Risk Management and Insurance Major.

    The Nile River.

Check out this camel cheezin' at me.

    The top of a pyramid.

This Sphinx and Pyramid...only remaining of the 7 wonders of the world.

There were some awesome signs on the trip, so I nabbed a picture of a few of them.  Take special note to the Andre the Giant one and the Pedestrian Crossing one where someone has painted in wings and a halo.

There you have it.  I know it was a lot of pictures and there really is no good way to explain the whole trip, but all in all, it was the trip of a lifetime.  There were so many times where I was like, "Wow, I'm in Jerusalem" or "Wow, I'm really on the Sea of Galilee."  It was amazing and it brought so many things to life.  Kind of like a Pop-Up book from when I was a kid.

That's it.  Shoot some comments my way if you got input, questions, or want to know more.

    Oh, and one last thing:

    I love whole month summaries.

I really do.  It helps me reflect on the recent past.  What I learned.  What I forgot.  And what I hope will never happen again.  Let us begin with the "hope it never happens again."

I got a deer.  The last time I went hunting I was 12, carrying a .22 and on the prowl for squirrels.  My dad sat there rifle in hand watching the horizon for deer while I scoped the treetops looking for helpless rodents unknowingly bounding towards their demise.  I never did shoot a squirrel.  I never even came close to shooting a deer.  However, I have three deer to my name.  My weapon of choice just happens to have wheels.  Some prefer high powered rifles.  I, apparently, prefer the more expensive automobile.  On the 17th I managed to bring my tally to 3 deer in the past 5 years.  This definitely rates pretty high up there on my "hope it never happens again" list.  In response, I made a facebook group, "I really hate deer."  Feel free to join the movement.  I'll even make you an officer.

On a good note, that same night we had our youth Christmas party.
It was a really good party with a lot of good food and we had a lot of fun.
I took a couple of pictures that I thought turned out really nicely.
This was a good group shot at the end of the party. (notice the face the girl next to the hot wheels is making...priceless)

This shot, I just love the lighting.  To me, the Christmas tree looks crisp.

Speaking of facebook, I've been thinking about it recently.  Don't get me wrong, I love the whole idea and I pretty much check it as much as my e-mail.  The only problem I have is the birthday reminder.  I feel like it discounts the friends that you have that actually remembered your birthday without a reminder.  If I wish someone a happy birthday, then they wouldn't be able to tell if I actually knew it or just happened to check the facebook that morn.  I know it's not that big a deal, but something I've been pondering.

Over the Christmas break I went with some of my friends from both Commerce and Athens to see the Lake Lanier Islands Magical Night of Lights.  We packed the Suburban full to minimize the cost of the trip and headed towards Buford.  The whole trip was a blast.  The lights aren't necessarily overwhelming, but there are a lot of really intricate designs that make you appreciate what they've done.  There was a live nativity with Mary, Joseph, a baby, shepherds, a donkey and a camel.  There may have been other animals, but that is all I saw.  My favorite part is at the end of the Night of Lights they have a few tents set up with a store set up full of all kinds of Christmas goodies.  Right outside of that tent they had two big bond fires going that people could purchase some marshmellows and roast them by the fire.  It was freezing out, so that made it all the more fun.  I may have eaten 10 mallows through the duration that we were there.

Here's a quick summary of some of the lights we saw.  You can thank me later for summing it all up and saving you 25 bucks.

A pretty awesome picture of the fire we stood around.

Here's a group shot of us standing by the fire.

A little before Christmas, my father and I made a run to Athens to pick up some last minute Christmas gifts.  We were about half way there when I see my dad pull out his cell phone.  He's had this thing since the summer and as far as I can tell has gotten pretty used to it.  When he first got it, I programed most of the numbers that he would need in there so he could access them easily.  I also showed him how to use the voice command function.  Basically what happens is that you press a button on the side of the phone and the phone asks you to "Say a command."  The user then proceeds to say "Contacts" to get to the phone book and then says the name of the person who he or she wants to call.  It works every time I use it.  On this particular occassion I sit there as my dad repeats "contacts" over and over again.  He finally gets to the phone book to where he wants to call "Anna" but the phone keeps saying "Did you say 'Work'?"  Three minutes of "yeses" and "nos" later,  my dad pulls the phone away from his ear, looks at me and says, "I hate arguing with this thing."  I laughed so hard.

Christmas came and we had a really good time together.  I think last year I hit the age where I enjoy giving gifts more than I do receiving them.  Not just any gift, but ones that I had to really think about or I knew the person really wanted.  I got to hook my sister up with some much needed ipod accessories and the other sister with a board game she had been craving.  My dad has been on a puzzle rampage, so I thought a need idea would be to give him a picture puzzle of the entire family.  I ran into a catch with that one though, it takes two weeks to do it.  I did it anyways, so I should be getting the puzzle back from Wal-Mart to give to dad any day now. Here's the family picture I used.

For my mom I was able to do something she had been asking me to do for years now.  She has always wanted a drawn picture of our house.  I had the time, so I sat down and over the course of two late nights I drew our house from a picture I had.
Here is both the picture and the drawing.

Drawing relaxes me, I'm not sure why, but it is a form of release.  The only thing is that I hardly make time for it.

Christmas rolled on by and we visited family in Nashville and in Douglasville.  It was all squeezed into 2 days, so it went by really quick.  I guess that is what happens when every one starts getting older.  It was still the holidays and I got to spend it with family, which is what counts.

New Years Eve brought in a little party here at "the Du" (official name of my new pad on Cedar Shoals).  There were so many people here, it was ridiculous.  I think at one point I counted about 35 or 40 all squeezed into the kitchen and living room.  We had an awesome time.  We had multiple events going on throughout, including, but not limited to:

    Darts
(Check the dart out mid-air...as a side note, this girl is really good at darts.  Jessica's just got skills.  It burns me up that I can't beat her, but I do have to give her props.)

    Connect Four
(By these pictures you can tell our games were pretty intense)

and Dance Dance Revolution to name a few. (That's me cutting a rug)

I didn't know half the people that came through, but I got to meet them all.
For instance, these guys.  I only knew the 2 dudes out of the 6 people here in this photo before the evening began.

Brandon invited a lot of old friends and ended up cooking a Jumbalaya for the group.  So everyone that came through these doors left here fed.  We brought in the New Year in good fashion with a little sparkling grape juice and some toasts.  Fun times all around.

Regular nintendo has been filling my life recently since youth group has been on hold for the past two weeks.  I've spent the last week finding all the old secrets and tricks in Super Mario Bros. that I missed as a kid.  I guess the only downside is that I feel kind of like a failure having not figured some of these things out until I was 23, when I should have known them when I was 12.  Oh well.  It's like it is Christmas morning 1989 all over again.

There have been some awesome Bowl Games this year.  I lot of close ones coming down to the last second.  The dawgs lost, but it was still a very good game.  The USC vs. Texas game tonight was phenomenal.  I saw this t-shirt throughout the crowd, and I have to agree...I heart VY.

He was amazing.  I wonder if that's what DJ would have been like if he was 4 inches taller and 30 pounds bigger.  Regardless, it was a phenomenal bowl season.

Nonetheless, it is time to close and I bid you farewell and a happy new year.

Next time I'll give you a picture comparison update on the size of my turtle Zoe.
    Until then...Peace, Love, Christ

P.S. Chuck Norris gives his greetings as well

How about it has been a month since an update....impressive, huh?

Let's see, what's new with me.  I've put up a website for Salem Baptist...check it out, it is pretty much off the chain if I say so myself.
It took quite a hefty amount of time to dish those out, but I did enjoy doing them.  Here are the banners I used for the sites, which are still a WIP.

Now I have to decide what I want to do with the other domain name that came with that package.  I used the Salem one and now I need to decide if I want to use the other one for my own personal use or for something else...ideas?

I also got my braces off....that was pretty cool.  It's a new thing to be able to eat a meal and not spend the next two weeks finding pieces of said meal still lingering in the metal.  I've been trying to take good care of them so that they stay that way.

My turtle is getting bigger.  It is not a dramatic change, but you can definitely tell there is some change in her size.  I really do enjoy watching her eat and cleaning her aquarium and all that goes with it.  It's just kind of cool to have a pet that is mine.

I got to go to the Jingle Jam.  Joseph, Lauren, Laura, Erinn, and I went and saw Howie Day, Gavin DeGraw, James Blunt, Jason Mraz, and Switchfoot perform.  It was a pretty good concert.  I guess the only downside to it was that it wasn't full shows from all 5 artists.  I did refan the flame to my likeness for live concerts.  I've started downloading live concerts recorded from performances from a free internet resource.  I definitely like the live aspect of the music, especially off-the-cuff things.

Chronicles of Narnia was flippin awesome.  I got to see it at the Mall of Georgia when I took the youth on a shopping trip.  I absolutely loved it.  It was definitely one of the best movies I have seen in the past few years.  It made the whole shopping trip fly by, especially with 41 people that I was in charge of spread throughout the mall.  I didn't get any shopping done, so I've got to take care of that pretty soon.

Classes are over for me, so I've been on my break for awhile now.  I think I've made an A in both of my classes, I know at least one of them, but the other isn't posted yet.

I busted out the old Nintendo this past week.  We've been playing Mike Tyson's Punchout, RBI Baseball, Caveman Games, and the classic Super Mario Bros.  I have about 50 games, so our selection is quite extensive, but I think the most impressive thing has been the regularity of the game system playing without the annoying interruption of blinking, shutting off, or excessive cartridge blowing.  It really takes me back.

I got to help decorate at home in Commerce.  We brought all the decorations up from the basement and put the tree up.  If you know my family, then you know that all of us in one room trying to get things done together is quite an ordeal.  Dad loves ragging Anna and Jenifer, so he takes his shirt off to decorate the tree.  He then proceeds to tell us that for every ornament he puts up, he's taking a piece of clothing off...thus describes Christmas at the Bearden's.  There is a lot of laughing and arguing and complaining about people sitting down instead of helping, but when it is all said and done, we light the tree and sit there in awe at the beauty.  That is somthing I look forward to every year.

Anyways, I think that is it for now.  I know there wasn't as much wit as usual, but I'll see what I can come up with for the next issue of Spoken Thoughts.  Until then, Merry Christmas and long live Aslan.

P.S. Another morsel from our friend Mr. Chuck Norris.
